Bill Charlap Trio - Village Vanguard
September 08, 2019 - New York

As a unit, this must be one of the best piano trios ever, and certainly as instantly recognisable as any of its great predecessors. Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (famously unrelated), the total effect is just perfect. As always, Charlap’s playing provides convincing proof that it is still possible to create fresh but pertinent treatments of well-known standard songs.

Monty Alexander - Blue Note

Nearly sixty years after he moved to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, his hometown, Grammy-nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic, touring the world relentlessly with various projects, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicings, a romantic spirit, and a consistent predisposition, like Alexander, accurately states, "to build up the heat and kick up a storm." In the course of any given performance, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae. Documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing), the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and in 2018 Th... Finish Ticket - Mercury Lounge
September 13, 2019 - New York

Finish Ticket is a band of brothers and friends from the San Francisco Bay Area. The group was formed in 2008 by twin brothers Brendan and Michael Hoye and good friend Alex DiDonato in high school. Influenced by bands like The Killers and The Strokes, they shared a vision of blending dynamic, guitar-driven rock with upbeat, melodic and pop hooks, with an emphasis on a thrilling, high-energy live show. "In the early days, no one would take us seriously because of our age," says guitarist Alex DiDonato. "We were playing shows in bars every weekend with bands of people in their mid-to-late 20s, and we were only 16-17. We realized that our live show had to be awesome to change everyone's perception, and that became our driving force. Our goal was to prove to everyone that we were serious about our music, that we were more than just a high school band." They quickly honed their skills and rose through the ranks of the local music scene, winning a competition to open a local radio station's annual arena show, and eventually opening for bands like Phoenix and The Black Keys. After the independent release of their self-produced 2013 album, Tears You Apart, the band toured nationally and ha... (read more)
