Emma Scully Gallery presents Cast Iron
In this new series titled Cast Iron, New York City-based design gallerist and curator Emma Scully commissioned eight disparate voices around the world to create eight works in cast iron; young designers making digital files materialized in a symbol of the 19th-century industrial revolution. A marriage of the material origins of industrial making and current digital hyper-connectivity of design ideas.
Emma thoughtfully uses our globalized production system, buying ideas not goods, shipping digital files not tons of iron. Pieces are produced close to buyers minimizing the environmental impact of production and sale. Co-opting and inverting the intricate global system of production by using American industry to produce a global scope of design. The process of producing the edition itself becomes a commentary on our global consumer society.
Cast Iron is Emma’s inaugural exhibition in New York City and marks her return to her native city after three years in Los Angeles where Emma Scully Gallery was born. Each piece was produced by Emma with the help of the O.K Foundry – a fourth-generation foundry in Virginia. The collection is presented in a quintessential Upper East Side art gallery which Emma reimagined with the help of Brooklyn-based studio Wallpaper Projects. Their Patina Study N1 (a collaboration with Kin & Company) itself based on the rich, textural qualities of patinated metal, is applied on the primary gallery wall, creating an intriguing conversation between the objects and their surrounding environment.
Featured designers: Chen Chen & Kai Williams (USA) Tellurico (Italy) Brecht Wright Gander (USA) Faissal El-Malak (Dubai) Bradley L. Bowers (USA) Ryan Decker (USA) Charlotte Kingsnorth (United Kingdom) Nel Verbeke (Belgium)
