SHE, Women’s Vocal Ensemble
SHE, Women’s Vocal Ensemble, a 14-voice chorus, will perform SAMPLER, a free a cappella program of 20th and 21st century music, at 4pm on Sunday, October 9 at Christ and St Stephen’s Church, 120 W 69th Street in Manhattan. Audience members are encouraged to make donations at the concert to World Central Kitchen, in support of their efforts worldwide. 100% of donated monies will be conveyed directly to WCK.
SAMPLER will highlight a diverse group of composers and musical styles, including works by Alysia Lee, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Mia Makaroff, César Carrillo, Ola Gjeilo, Pärt Uusberg, Amy Scurria, René Clausen, Nilo Alcala and Michael Bussewitz-Quarm. The concert continues SHE’s tradition of presenting free concerts to benefit charitable organizations, including the Coalition for the Homeless, Doctors Without Borders, and Dress for Success NY. The chorus last performed in 2005 but was inspired by World Central Kitchen’s recent rapid mobilization in Ukraine. WCK’s founder, chef José Andrés, stated regarding Ukraine, “We are food fighters. We are going to make sure that anybody who is hungry, until things get better, will have a decent plate of food.” SHE is proud to contribute to this effort.
SHE Artistic Director Sally G. Hoskins says, “Women’s voices can convey myriad shades of emotional nuance and passion. The composers featured in SAMPLER, each in their own way, have creatively highlighted the expressive range of the singers, whether the focus is personal devotion, as in the Alcala and Carrillo works, social injustice, as in Lee and Bussewitz-Quarm’s pieces, or philosophical issues as addressed by Uusberg and Scurria. The SAMPLER concert showcases unique and modern choral writing for women.”
