Orpheus Chamber Orchestra & Carolin Widmann, Violin
Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
The wind players of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra are spotlighted in a program featuring versatile German violinist Carolin Widmann. Widmann, in her NYC debut, takes the lead in Kurt Weill's showstopping Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra, which demonstrates the classical European pedigree of the multifaceted composer while dropping hints of the swinging Broadway style he would later adopt in full. Several works for winds by Mozart bookend the Weill Concerto: a transcription of the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro becomes a gauntlet of articulation by demanding a violinistic character from the woodwinds, and the program closes with the substantial, operatic "Gran Partita."
