Intrepid Museum Celebrates Women's History Month with Tour Guide Talks

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will celebrate Women’s History Month this March with a special edition of its regular Tour Guide Talks. Three different talks will be given on various days and times from Saturday, March 1, 2014 until Monday, March 31, 2014.

Weekends at 11am & 1pm - “Who Was Sally Ride?”

Dr. Sally Ride, who passed away in July 2012, was a physicist, engineer, astronaut, educator and author. She broke barriers by becoming the first American woman to fly into space in 1983. After retiring in 1987 to pursue a career in education, one of her passions became encouraging students, especially girls and young women, to study science and math.

During this 15-minute talk our tour guides will highlight the accomplishments of a national hero and powerful role model.

Weekends at 11:45am & 1:45pm -  “The Real Rosie the Riveter”

At the start of World War II, women were needed to fill the jobs men left behind. The name “Rosie the Riveter” is first heard in song and then seen in Norman Rockwell’s powerful image. This icon has come to symbolize all women who helped win the war by working where needed. Visitors will hear the real life stories of women who say being a “Rosie” changed their lives, including Marilyn Monroe!

Learn more during this 15-minute talk about these amazing women who have inspired generations of young women.

Daily at 3pm - “Intrepid Women: Extraordinary Stories of Women in Sea, Air and Space,”

While no women actually served aboard USS Intrepid, this one-hour talk will recount over seventy years of trailblazing women and their accomplishments in sea, air and space. From “Rosie the Riveter” to Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, this tour will explore the role women have played in the U.S. military from the 1940s to the present day, which can be summed up by the iconic phrase, “WE CAN DO IT!”

All Tour Guide Talks are free with the price of admission to the Museum. Tours are most appropriate for ages 6 and up. Sign up at the Information Desk in Hangar 1.
