White House Chef to Bake for Sweeney Todd in NYC

Former White House Pastry Chef Bill “the Crust Master” Yosses will serve as “official pie maker” for the U.S. transfer of London’s West End hit, the Tooting Arts Club’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The show will begin performances on February 14th, with opening night set for March 1st.

“I am so excited to be working with the creative team of Sweeney Todd to bring to life the full enjoyment of this popular musical,” noted Yosses. “I am creating a modern and delicious version of the classic English ‘pie and mash’ dish that theatergoers can enjoy before the show. It will be a truly ‘immersive—you are there—experience’ of the best kind." (In London, the show debuted in Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop, the oldest continuously operating pie shop in Britain.)

And while the musical centers on a vengeful, homicidal barber who teams up with meat pie maven Mrs. Lovett to dispose of the (ahem) meaty bits of the recently disposed of, Yosses’s creations will be altogether free of people parts, sticking to the traditional recipe of non-human meat (or a veggie version), laced with mashed potatoes and a kind of hot parsley sauce the Brits dubbed “liquor.”

If you want to get a jumpstart on reserving your tickets for a formidable show and the opportunity to partake in a pie fit for a President as we zero in on one of history’s most madcap presidential elections, tickets go on sale starting October 24th and can be scored on SweeneyToddNYC.com.

As the Times of London said of this particularly delicious production: “No matter how big a Stephen Sondheim fan you are, you’ve never seen Sweeney Todd served up quite like this.” And just when you thought Broadway’s Waitress had cornered the market on theatrical pies...

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will be playing at the Barrow Street Theatre, 27 Barrow St., in Greenwich Village.
