Intrepid Museum's Kids Week 2014 Begins 2/15

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will host its annual Kids Week from Saturday, February 15-Sunday, February 23. During “Kids Week,” children will have the opportunity to participate in dozens of fun, educational and interactive activities the whole family will enjoy.

This year’s special events include:

Saturday, February 15 & Sunday, February 16: Science Meets Science Fiction Weekend. From nano-science to your favorite sci-fi characters, this is a weekend of exploration, learning and fun! From 10:00am-5:00pm, kids can interact with legions of their favorite Star Wars characters, see the future of printing with demonstrations from 3D printers, and explore activities from the Liberty Science Center, Museum of Math, RoboFun, and more. Tinkersphere Technology Workshops will take place at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm each day. Throughout the weekend, astronaut Nicole P. Stott will be on hand to give presentations, meet with kids and sign autographs.

Monday, February 17: Super Hero Headquarters. Channel your inner super hero for special appearances and stunt shows by various super heroes throughout the day.  Super hero aircraft tours will be offered at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. The National Cartoonist Society will be on hand to create personal cartoons from 1:00-2:30pm, and kids can get their faces painted from 1:30-4:00pm. Interactive displays and activities from Sesame Street Live! (along with ticket giveaways) and Time Warner Cable Interactive will take place from 10:00am-5:00pm.

Tuesday, February 18: Broadway on Intrepid. Broadway Showcase hosted by Jennifer Fouche of the off-Broadway smash Sistas, featuring dazzling performances from Pippin, Cinderella and Matilda at 12pm. Performances by Story Pirates at 1:30pm in the Lutnick Theater, and Gazillion Bubble Show at 2:00pm on Hanger 3’s main stage. The world famous Rockettes will hold a Heart and Lights Dance Clinic at 3:00pm. Interactive displays and activities from Broadway’s Aladdin, Lion King, Newsies, Bronx Bombers and After Midnight throughout the day.

Wednesday, February 19:  Safari Adventure. Kids will go wild and meet animals from around the world! Animal Embassy will present their most enigmatic and dynamic animal ambassadors, from a Solomon Islands monkey-tailed skink to a Flemish giant rabbit to an African bull frog and more at 11:30am. The Central Park Zoo’s Wildlife Theater will perform Amazing Adaptations: The Dinosaur Adventure at 1pm and Polar Bear and the Beat at 3pm. An exciting demonstration by Talons! Birds of Prey will give visitors an up-close view of hawks, owls and ravens at 2pm. Interactive displays and activities from Hudson River Park Trust, Jenkinson’s Aquarium, Central Park Zoo and more from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

Thursday, February 20: Music Fun. Kids will rock out to performances from family-friendly bands and musical groups, including a performance of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds at 11:30am, followed by a concert from The Pop-Ups at 1pm. Special performance by the hit show STOMP at 2pm; concert by Tim and the Space Cadets at 3pm. Face-painters will be on hand from 1-3:30pm.  Interactive displays and activities from New Victory Theater, the Coca-Cola Bounce House and more from 10am to 5pm.

Friday, February 21: Intrepid’s Ports of Call Day. Kids will take an exciting trip “around the world” to learn about the culture, history and people at each of the USS Intrepid’s ports of call, and participate in a broad array of interactive activities. Join Operation Goody Bag and color a gift bag for those in need in the USA, learn how to fold Origami in Japan, courtesy of Origami USA, help color a coral reef in Australia, decorate a mask in Brazil, and enjoy many other activities in Hong Kong, Greece, Italy, and France. After each activity, kids will earn a stamp in their passport!

Saturday, February 22 & Sunday, February 23: Sports and Games Weekend.  Kids will enjoy exciting activities and displays including the New York Jets Quarterback toss, New York Cosmos Penalty Kick, New York Rangers Goal Shooting Alley, Coca-Cola Baseball Toss and more from 10am to 5pm each day. Kids can meet Brooklyn Cyclones mascot Sandy the Seagull on Saturday from 1-3pm.  New York Mets mascot Mr. Met will be on hand for photos and autographs on Sunday from 2-3pm.

In addition to the special events and appearances, staff of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Education Department will lead interactive educational demonstrations and tours throughout each day. Free raffles and giveaways will also take place all week long, with prizes including one week at Camp Intrepid this summer, tickets to Operation Slumber and an Intrepid Family Membership.
