From torch-song cabarets to cutting-edge dance clubs, from neighborhood bars to velvet-rope lounges, plus world-class comedy clubs and establishments with all manner of live entertainment, New York City is a world capital of nightlife. Here you can find libations from beer and wine to elaborate cocktails and high-end champagne, often accompanied by great food.

If your travels take you downtown, head over to Broome Street Bar in SoHo. With its mix of professionals and locals, Broome Street is a great place to stop in for a burger and a few beers. Open since 1972, it’s also notable for its coziness, the lovely stained-glass portrait behind the bar, and a good beer selection. 363 West Broadway at Broome St., 212-925-2086.

Voted the best comedy club in NYC by NY Press, Gotham Comedy Club is one of the city’s most elegant and upscale venues. It hosts seven shows a week with today’s top talent, such as Lewis Black and Colin Quinn. Even legends like Jerry Seinfeld drop in on occasion. Every third Sunday of the month, Gotham Comedy Club hosts “The Mixtape Comedy Show” with Anthony Anderson & Royale Watkins, featuring the hottest comics and musicians; past performers include Tracy Morgan and Patton Oswalt. Other comics scheduled for this month include Steve Byrne (3/10-12), and the Sklar Brothers (3/25-26). 208 W. 23rd St. btw. Seventh & Eighth Aves., 212-367-9000; gothamcomedyclub.com.

Times Square Arts Center features musical acts, but their stock in trade is comedy. Their nightly shows feature stand-up by superstar comics (call or check their website for the upcoming schedule), while the All Star Comedy shows feature top comics from The Late Show With David Letterman, Comedy Central Presents, and more. Every Saturday night at 10:30pm, they host The Ultimate Drag Off, an “interactive musical game show comedy’ with male and female contestants from all walks of life pitted against each other in a fabulous battle for drag superstardom. The colorful “cast” of contestants is an ever-changing weekly roster from across the country taking part in the wacky glamour-fest with brainy categories, comedic camp and live musical performances. Visit dragoff.com for more info on the show. 669 Eighth Ave. at 42nd St., 212-586-7829; timessquareartscenter.com.
