Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 13, 2019 - New York

I make objects from cardboard and clay. My work, however, is heavily rooted in the practice of drawing. Drawing is a linear tool—a tangible way to investigate, think and visually translate an idea into space. It is a generative process that propels my explorations from description to interpretation and abstraction where new questions and possibilities arise. A line can manifest itself in a myriad of ways from the simple to the abstruse. Clay is liberating as a drawing material. The material is the structure, the line itself. With cardboard, the line is often created by an intense infrastructure that demarcates where two planes almost meet. As a maker, I oscillate between translating line through negative space and drawing out loud in three dimensions. These two distinct approaches yield sculptural work in cardboard and clay that is seemingly disparate yet exploit the buoyancy of line and a commitment to hand building. They operate like dialects of a language. They speak to each other, and most often run parallel, but I always await their collision.

FLY - Village Vanguard
October 13, 2019 - New York

Tenor saxophone with bass and drums is a jazz format with a wild and woolly tradition. For tenor virtuosos like sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, trios have been opportunities to risk everything, to dance on a tightrope with no net. The tenor trio that calls itself Fly breaks with this tradition explicitly. Fly plays cerebral, rapt, interactive chamber jazz, deriving a wide range of textures and colors from three instruments. […] The music of Fly is sophisticated and sincere and enormously competent. — Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times

Ludwig and Bertie - Theater For the New City
Through October 13, 2019 - New York

"Ludwig and Bertie" by Douglas Lackey, directed by Alexander Harrington, takes on the forty-year love/hate relationship between Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, two leading twentieth-century philosophers, from their first meeting at Cambridge in 1911 to Wittgenstein's death in 1951. Russell is heterosexual, hedonistic and agnostic; Wittgenstein is puritanical, gay and Jewish. Russell is an imprisoned pacifist; Wittgenstein a decorated combat soldier. Wittgenstein is intensely religious; Russell mocks religion from first to last. Wittgenstein regards Russell as his "mental father," but their relationship has elements of rivalry. In Lackey's telling, Wittgenstein's thinking kindles the demolition of facts in our post-truth world while Russell's inspires the National Science Foundation. This play will show you how.

Singin' in the E.R. - Theater for the New City
Through October 13, 2019 - MANHATTAN

Sometimes a trip to the Emergency Room is so awful that it's just made for Theater of the Ridiculous. That's the premise of "Singin' in the E.R.," the newest musical by Ruby Lynn Reyner, a star of John Vaccarro's Playhouse of the Ridiculous who has been called a female Jerry Lewis. The piece is inspired by ordeals in a New York City hospital suffered by the author and her husband. Now she believes that the only way to deal with such life-changing experiences is through unrestrained, exorbitant laughter. The play was written from actual experiences, but they are transformed with outrageous satire. The setting is a fictional hospital in the dark world of medical mishaps. A variety of songs, all in rock 'n roll style, are nestled among outrageous scenes with such mind-bending events as arms falling off, crashes with the crash cart and fitting a woman's ass to a sling. One of the songs, "Biggest Balls in Town," was written by Reyner and the late Jackie Curtiss; the others are by Reyner alone.

The Marvelous Mr. Marzo - Don't Tell Mama
October 14, 2019 - New York

ACTOR/SINGER SCOTT RANERI PRESENTS NEW YORK SOLO CABARET DEBUT SHOW THE MARVELOUS MR. MARZO FOUR-SHOW RUN BEGINS AT DON’T TELL MAMA ON OCTOBER 14 AT 7 PM When Actor/Singer Scott Raneri was pondering a theme for his New York Solo Cabaret Debut Show, he decided to go back to his roots—literally. Last December, Raneri registered to take a DNA test with the ubiquitous genetic testing company 23andMe. Raneri wanted to learn more about his ancestry and his health profile. When he found he was a genetic match with a cousin he didn’t know he had, that led to a more startling discovery—that his grandfather was NOT the man who was married to his grandmother, but was a family friend named Butch Marzo. Hence, the show’s title. “I’ve wanted to create a solo cabaret show for years, but I didn’t want it to be a show about my love life or a tribute to a singer,” Raneri says. “I wanted to develop a show based on a really original idea. When I took that DNA test, I never thought that family secrets taken to the grave would be revealed though science and it would end up being the catalyst for a show. Once I discovered the truth about my grandmother’s husbands and lovers, I knew this was... (read more)

Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 14, 2019 - New York

Ronan Farrow: Catch and Kill - The Great Hall - Cooper Union

As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family. All the while, Farrow and his producer faced a degree of resistance they could not explain — until now. And a trail of clues revealed corruption and cover-ups from Hollywood to Washington and beyond. This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it’s the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement. Welcome to America: Linda Boström Knausgård and Jessie Chaffee - McNally Jackson Books
October 16, 2019 - New York

Linda Boström Knausgård's Welcome to America is "a piercing story of a girl who responds to trauma by mustering the most powerful weapon available to her: silence. (...) melodic, mythological, transformative, a testament to literature's powers..." (Vanity Fair) Ellen has stopped talking. She thinks she may have killed her dad. Her brother's barricaded himself in his room. Their mother, a successful actress, carries on as normal. We're a family of light she insists. But darkness seeps in everywhere and in their separate worlds each of them longs for togetherness. Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 16, 2019 - New York

Tom Speight - Rockwood Music Hall 2
October 16, 2019 - New York

This event is 21 and over Tom Speight is making up for lost time. Laid low by illness, beset by problems both personal and professional, the songwriter returned to what he does best: writing songs. Using his convalescence as a musical break, Tom found that music simply tumbled forth, a torrent of ideas, a flood of melody. "I wanted to do it," he says. "I came out of a big relationship – four or five years – and then I was pretty low. I'd just come out of two major operations, so it was a good, cathartic way of getting on with things." "You have to live life, don't you? Get your heart broken, meet someone and start something new. Experience things."

Empire of Borders - Housing Works Bookstore Cafe & Bar
October 16, 2019 - New York

In EMPIRE OF BORDERS: The Expansion of the US Border Around the World (Verso Books), journalist Todd Miller reveals that U.S. borders have effectively expanded thousands of miles outside of U.S. territory to encircle not simply American land but Washington's interests. Resources, training, and agents from the United States infiltrate the Caribbean and Central America; they reach across the Canadian border; and they go even farther afield, enforcing the division between the Global South and North. The highly publicized focus on a wall between the United States and Mexico misses the bigger picture of strengthening border enforcement around the world.

Hear how Bach looks to Italy and Mendelssohn to Scotland for inspiration. Bach studied composers like Vivaldi and Marcello, his concertos revealing a thorough grounding in Italian style with flowing melodies and technically dazzling solo parts. Mendelssohn's overture and symphony were the result of an 1829 tour of Scotland. The Hebrides Overture's glorious themes conjure visions of crashing waves on the Scottish islands, while the symphony's four movements—played without pause—reflect the mood of the Scottish landscape as well as folk song, and soar with glorious melodies.

As our next WaterWorks commissioned artist Jason ‘Timbuktu’ Diakité prepares for the debut of his autobiographical musical, A Drop of Midnight which premiers in Spring 2020, he will share his creative process on becoming one of Sweden’s chart topping hip hop artist to writing a best-selling novel to creating a theater piece and how a mix tape from Brooklyn traveled across the waters to the tiny village of Lund, Sweden and altered the course of his life forever. This conversation between MuMu Fresh and Jason ‘Timbuktu’ Diakité dives deep into the alchemical power of hip hop culture and music to move the crowd and transform lives. And who knows what might erupt when you get two fiercely talented MCs in one room.

George Lewis’ Soundlines - Skirball Center for the Performing Arts
October 18, 2019 - New York

Soundlines: A Dreaming Track is MacArthur Fellow George Lewis’s musical interpretation of percussionist and composer Steven Schick’s journal documenting his 700-mile walk from the US-Mexico border to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006. Directed by Jim Findlay, Schick performs as speaker and percussionist, joined by a chamber ensemble featuring eight musicians from the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and electronics. Reminiscent of Alexis de Tocqueville, and Henry David Thoreau, and the Great Migration, the Lewis’s libretto describes Schick’s inner moods, doubts, meditations, aesthetics, his personal musical practice, and social commentary, in a fashion that recalls the Australian aboriginal notion of the songline, or “dreaming track,” where repeating a song while navigating a landscape gains access to ancient stories related to the land. A surround-sound space will be created electronically, enabling text, music and field recordings related to the piece to be experienced more intensively.

Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 18, 2019 - New York

Harlem Jazz Series - The Makanda Project - Greater Calvary Baptist Church
October 18, 2019 - New York

The Makanda Project is an ensemble dedicated to performing the previously unrecorded compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre. Makanda was a brilliant composer, with compositions marked by a distinctive rhythmic and lyrical quality, along with how effectively he could do the unexpected. Pianist and leader John Kordalewski, who studied and performed with Makanda, has arranged almost 50 of the compositions for a large ensemble. With new arrangements, and without the opportunity to hear Makanda's performances of these pieces, the Makanda Project's approach differs from that of the "ghost bands" that sometimes form to honor the legacy of a great musician. The Makanda Project is extending Dr. McIntyre's work in new ways and has developed its own identity with his compositions as a vehicle. The group is based in Boston, Massachusetts, (Makanda's hometown) and was formed in 2005. Since then The Makanda Project has been sharing what they believe is something unique and special about Makanda's music and adding their own individual and collective voices to his compositions. 1st set: 7:00 pm - 7:45pm (15 min break) 2nd Set: 8:00pm - 8:45pm House doors open at 6:30 pm Price: $20 Art... Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 19, 2019 - New York

Nancy Redman's "At Wit's End: A Home for Retired Comics" - Theatre Row
October 19, 2019 - NY

Actress/playwright/stand-up comedian Nancy Redman returns to the United Solo Theatre Festival with her new one-woman show "At Wit's End: A Home for Retired Comics," directed by Bill Cosgriff. Nancy's past three appearances on the United Solo Theatre Festival earned her special awards as Best Comedian and Best Stand-Up. Wrote critic Michael Mraz in nytheatre.com: "Redman is hilarious and intriguing to watch throughout. She's been described in the past with comparisons to Woody Allen, Richard Lewis, and Jackie Mason; and while I can see the reasoning behind this...after seeing her solo shows two straight years, she is distinctively herself: none other than Nancy Redman, and I think the comparisons don't quite do her stage presence and craft justice."

Denis Matsuev, Piano - Carnegie Hall
October 20, 2019 - New York

It takes a pianist with "epic technique … superhuman speed, power, and agility" (The Boston Globe) to successfully embrace Liszt's flash and Stravinsky's high-octane excitement. Denis Matsuev is just the artist. Liszt's Sonata unfolds in one massive movement with a deliriously virtuosic central section and whispering finale, while his Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is a rollicking showpiece. Stravinsky's piano transcriptions of the "Russian Dance," "Pétrouchka's Room," and "Shrovetide Fair" from his great ballet are stunning showpieces that also make daunting technical demands of the performer.

The Glass Menagerie - Wild Project
Through October 20, 2019 - New York

Ruth Stage is thrilled to present a chilling new take on Tennessee Williams' seminal play, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, directed by Austin Pendleton and Peter Bloch. After two critically acclaimed runs in 2018 of Wars of the Roses, directors Austin Pendleton and Peter Bloch reunite with actor Matt de Rogatis to take on the American classic, The Glass Menagerie. In this disquieting production, the tormented Tom (de Rogatis) relives the story of his time in the Wingfields St. Louis apartment, circa 1939, as if he were remembering it through the lens of a spooky dream. The cast, led by Ginger Grace as the iconic Amanda Wingfield, consists of Matt de Rogatis as her son Tom Wingfield, Alexandra Rose as Laura Wingfield, and Spencer Scott as The Gentleman Caller. Set designer Jessie Bonaventure, who was the assistant set designer on the Broadway musical Hadestown, which garnered four Tony Awards, including Best Scenic Design, collaborates with lighting designer Steven Wolf to create a version of this Tennessee Williams masterpiece that borders on horror. Dimly lit and surrealistic, the set itself will consist of props made of glass and the actors will live in a chilling, dreamlike... (read more)

ALCHEMY Photo Exhibit by Michel Leroy - Gallery MAX SoHo
Through October 23, 2019 - New York

ALCHEMY, featuring never before seen photos, is award-winning photographer Michel Leroy’s most defining project. His collaboration with professional athletes with varying body types began in 2017, and has resulted in images that are vulnerable and explicit without sexual objectification. The photos are notable for the tactile permanence of flesh revealed through the in-camera technique and lighting that enhance textures and brings out details unseen by the causal glance. Intentional shadowing and the ambiguous mixture of masculine and feminine posing further blur the lines between the body and identity, challenging the viewers to question their assumptions. By emphasizing form over identity, Leroy seduces the viewer with insights that reveal empathy and acceptance for the physical similarities of the human body over individual differences.

For her first solo exhibition in New York, artist Minerva Cuevas presents a body of video work that makes concise connections between the consequences of dominant economic ideologies and urgent, global ecological and social issues. Gathering eight video installations and projections, Disidencia (Dissent) brings together a range of visual strategies that Cuevas has deployed to engage with such topics as the decay of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, corporate America’s insatiable brand of globalization, and a video cartography of protests and resistance throughout her home city. At a time when divisive politics are on the rise and deregulation and privatization seem almost unavoidable, Cuevas shows us an alternative to such dangers and empowers our own social relations. “Titled after one of Cuevas’s emblematic works, Disidencia serves to establish opposition and active contestation,” explains Gabriel Bogossian, who has co-curated the exhibition alongside Solange Farkas, dire... TERRA FIRMA is set in a not-so-distant Beckettian future–years after a conflict known as the Big War, in which a tiny kingdom wrestles with the problems of running a nation–and opposing notions of what makes a citizen, a country, and a civilization. The play is inspired by a real-life event and its aftermath: In 1960’s Britain, a retired WWII army major claimed an abandoned aircraft platform in international waters off the coast of Essex as his own sovereign nation, planted his flag, and coined a motto, E Mare Libertas! (From the Sea, Freedom!). TERRA FIRMA was originally a commission for the Royal Court Theatre, the premiere venue for new writing in the UK. Featuring Andrus Nichols (Sense & Sensibility), T. Ryder Smith (Oslo), John Keating (Irish Rep’s The Shadow of a Gunman), and Gerardo Rodriguez (The Blacklist).

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia. Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

Verdi: Creating Otello and Falstaff - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 05, 2020 - Manhattan

After Aida in 1871, except for occasional projects, Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), Italy's pre-eminent composer, retired from opera at the age of 58. This, however, did not prevent constant pleas from his publisher, Giulio Ricordi (1840–1912), and his future librettist, Arrigo Boito (1842–1918), for the maestro to return to the operatic stage. Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 12, 2020 - Manhattan

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and they demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological sensitivity, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent's sitters on canvas. The first major exhibition to explore the artist's expressive portraits in charcoal, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal will recognize the sheer scale of Sargent's achievement as a portrait draftsman. Important international loans, from both public and private collections, will showcase Sargent's sitters, many of them famous for their roles in politics, society, and the arts. The exhibition will also explore the friendships and the networks of patronage that underpinned Sargent's practice as a portrait draftsman in Edwardian Britain and Progressive Era America.

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591–1666), was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. The Morgan owns more than twenty-five works by the artist, and these are the subject of a focused exhibition, supplemented by a handful of loans from public and private New York collections, to be held at the Morgan in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition will include sheets from all moments of the artist's career. His early awareness of the work of the Carracci in Bologna is documented by figures drawn from everyday life as well as brilliant caricatures; two drawings for Guercino's own drawing manual are further testament to his interest in questions of academic practice. Following his career, a range of preparatory drawings includes studies made in connection with his earliest altarpieces as well as his mature masterpieces, including multiple studies for several projects, allowing the visitor to see Guercino's mind at work as he reconsidered his ideas. The Morgan's holdings also include studies for engravings, as well as highly finished landscape and figure drawing... (read more)

SAB's Ballet Connoisseurship is an educational offering for adults providing seasoned ballet goers, patrons, students, scholars, and newcomers alike with knowledge and perspectives that will enhance their appreciation of ballet. Each unit consists of three 90-minute courses and will feature one course which illuminates SAB's unique methods and the Balanchine aesthetic through live in-studio student demonstrations. Ballet Connoisseurship was launched in January 2019 as part of our new "SAB Open" division. The first three units ran January through April 2019, exploring history, technique, and choreographic masters. The next six units will run September 2019 through May 2020, both covering new territory and taking deeper looks into last winter's course matter.

Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
