Opening Reception for Gail Biederman: The Feel of a Place - BRIC House Hallway
September 12, 2019 - Brooklyn

Gail Biederman has created The Feel of a Place from materials ranging from yarn and felt to nails, each tailored and arranged to evoke different elements of Brooklyn's waterfront. Industrial felt represents the historically industrial landscape around piers, for example, while intersecting lines of felt mimic subway lines and other travel routes. Viewers may also notice the contrast between topographies of North and South Brooklyn in the density of infrastructure and transportation grids. The tactility of Biederman's materials, juxtaposed with the abstracted forms they take, highlight the coexistence of our embodied experience of the city with a more schematic conception in the act of mapping.

September 12, 2019 - Fort Greene

Beyond Geographies: Contemporary Art and Muslim Experience presents the work of nine New York based artists who employ a range of visual strategies to manifest multiple dimensions of the contemporary Muslim experience. Of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African-American descent, these artists grapple with complex, hybrid identities. While drawing upon such areas of inquiry as mythology, spiritual philosophy and ritual, science, and social and political history, these artists are largely unburdened by the themes and forms that have come to symbolize recent art concerned with Muslim culture - the veil, calligraphy, or the events of 9/11, for example. Rather, they draw broadly on their identities as members of disparate diasporic communities, as immigrants, and as participants in the contemporary art discourse, to navigate and express identities that are fluid, layered, and engaged in a rigorous questioning of both tradition and contemporaneity. In their explorations of the specificities of cultures and communities they claim as their own, these artists bring new frames of reference toward a broader and more nuanced understanding of a world whose boundaries are increasingly porous.

Oliver Baez Bendorf: Advantages of Being Evergreen - Books are Magic
September 14, 2019 - Cobble Hill

Equal part prayer and potion and survival guide, Oliver Baez Bendorf's remarkable Advantages of Being Evergreen is an essential book for our time and for all time. With rigorous compassion and great formal dexterity Bendorf imagines a new world for all of our animal selves in which we are truly seen and truly safe. At the same time these are poems that never shy from the shocking violence and cruelty of this world. I don't know when I've read a book that is so gentle and ferocious at the same time. Over and over again people come together to make their individual and communal body whole, knowing all the while that so much of the world seeks to wreck even the simplest kinds of safety. Baez Bendorf is making a future grammar for the moment all of our vessels are free and held. I am living for the world these poems anticipate. And I'm so happy to be held by them in the times that keep coming on this endless road to safety. This is a book of the earth's abiding wonder. And the body's unbreakable ability to bloom."

Eric Andre: Legalize Everything Tour - Kings Theatre
September 15, 2019 - Brooklyn

ERIC ANDRE is the creator and host of Adult Swim's hit series "The Eric Andre Show." He's also a writer and executive producer for the network's new late night comedy "Mostly 4 Millennials," which premiered on July 1st and airs Sundays at midnight. Andre also lends his voice to the hyena 'Azizi' in Disney's reimagining of THE LION KING (July 2019), from director Jon Favreau. With an already proven standup act, Andre decided to break into the world of late night talk shows. But of course he brings his own flare to what is otherwise a very organized and predictable late night routine. Unlike his counterparts, Jimmy Fallon or Conan O'Brien, Andre's unrelenting and constantly over the top humor puts some of his guests on "The Eric Andre Show" into situations they never thought they would end up in. "The Eric Andre Show" is a live action comedy television series that premiered May 20th, 2012 on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Rattling the minds of TV censors, celebrity guests and viewers alike, the World's most unstable talk show host has been running for four seasons and is Adult Swim's top-rated show, with the help of his longtime friend and profoundly apathetic co-host Hannibal Bures... It was an auspicious start to a trailblazing career that saw Singleton bring stories of black urban life to the screen with never-before-seen depth, introduce hip-hop culture to mainstream cinema, and launch the film careers of superstars like Janet Jackson, Ice Cube, Taraji P. Henson, and Regina King. Writ with searing intensity, his films grapple with big picture ideas—racism, masculinity, and the American Dream—with profound humanity.

Elizabeth Krief and Jacques Manardo Artist Residency Program: Juliette Deschamps - The Invisible Dog Art Center
Through September 22, 2019 - Brooklyn

The Elizabeth Krief and Jacques Manardo Artist Residency Program at The Invisible Dog Art Center offers artists of all disciplines and nationalities the opportunity to reside in New York City, without any obligation of a final production and objective, aside from engaging with our city of fantasy, change, excess, power, possibility, hustle, and grandeur. Everyone finds their own way and the experiments are impossible to anticipate. New York changes all who visit; we're anxiously waiting to see what resident artists see and discover. Artists will be housed in a furnished apartment in the heart of Brooklyn near The Invisible Dog and are encouraged to live in total immersion, connect with one of the most vibrant artist communities, meet professionals from the international art world, and participate in events in New York and abroad (Armory Show, Frieze, etc.). The residency requires applicants to have presented work in their country of origin (USA included) or abroad, but having spent little to no time in New York City. This 4-year-old program was made possible thanks to the exclusive support of Elizabeth Krief and Jacques Manardo.
