New York Before New York: The Castello Plan of New Amsterdam
This installation is organized around the Castello Plan, a map depicting New Amsterdam c. 1660, right before the English took control. Celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Dutch purchase of what would eventually evolve into New York, the exhibit highlights life in Manhatta, the Lenape name for what's now considered Lower Manhattan. Through documents, objects, and a 3D model, it also showcases the diverse mix of ethnicities and languages present at the time, the Dutch values of tolerance that underpinned the colony, and the dark legacies of slavery and the displacement of Native Americans.
Admission is pay-as-you-wish from 6–8 pm on Fridays.
